Shepherd's purse is one of the most important herbs for bleeding. Due to the tyramine and other amines it contains, it is great for heavy bleeding. The herb is both a vasodilator, which means it opens blood vessels, and also hastens coagulation and constrict blood vessels. The opening of the blood vessels reduces blood pressure, and the coagulation stops the bleeding. Shepherd's purse contains a protein that acts in the same way in the body as the hormone oxytocin. It constricts the smooth muscles that support and surround blood vessels, especially those in the uterus. Other chemicals in the herb accelerates clotting. Other compounds in the herb helps the uterus contract, which explains the long-time use of the herb to help the womb return to normal size after childbirth.
