par Kobie Babb

Ashwagandha is a powerful all around herb. It is classified as an adaptogen. Adaptogen herbs help the body to deal with stress. Ashwagandha does just that as well as rejuvenates the body without being overly stimulating. It also acts as a mild sedative, and promotes deep and restful sleep.

Withanolide is the active phytochemical in ashwagandha. This indirectly increases activity of steroidal hormones such as testosterone and progesterone. Testosterone effect on sex drive is what gives ashwagandha its aphrodisiac effect.

Withanolide has also shown antibiotic and antitumor potential as well. It's useful for fatigue resulting from exercise or even chemotherapy. It also  relaxes blood vessels, which stimulates circulation. It has a tonic effect on rheumatic and autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Ashwagandha also has an anti-inflammatory effect and is used to treat sciatica, and has also been used to treat alcoholism. It is used for alcohol withdrawal anxiety. It also helps to boost brain function as well as lowers blood sugar and cortisol levels.

So those are some of ashwagandha root benefits. What about ashwagandha side effects? What about ashwagandha dosage? Lets get into it. As with just about everything else in life, too much of one thing is usually not good for you . Ashwagandha is no different. Too much ashwagandha may cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. If you are diabetic, be cautious because it may cause your blood sugar levels to go too low. If you have low blood pressure, ashwagandha can potentially cause your blood pressure to go lower. You shouldn't use it if you have stomach ulcers. It may also increase thyroid hormone levels. Use carefully if you have a thyroid condition.

So now on to the ashwagandha dosage recommendations.  A cup in the morning and one in the evening should help with your bodies stress levels. 8 to 12oz of water to a teaspoon of the herb should be fine.
